Current Grant Opportunities

2012 Health and Human Service Program

From 2003 to 2011, the Pohlad Family Foundation awarded $2.73 million in general operating support to strong nonprofits providing essential and effective human services to financially disadvantaged children and families.  Support ranged from emergency needs to workforce development.

Beginning in 2012, the Pohlad Family Foundation is implementing two new funding strategies with specific goals for support of human service and primary health care organizations.  Grants will be fewer, larger and more strategic with most ranging from $20,000 to $50,000.  Applications will be by invitation only; however, letters of intent (as described below) are accepted.  Organizations may receive only one grant in any one calendar year from the Foundation.

1.) The first strategy will support programs that move families away from poverty, so that there are fewer children growing up poor.  Nonprofit organizations invited to apply will have established programs with solid outcomes that demonstrate the ability to increase long term the incomes of families at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Two-page letters of intent for programs that increase family incomes long term are due March 30, 2012, from organizations located in and serving people living in the nine-county Twin Cities area.

The letters must include the strategy for which funding is sought and the following:

  • organization’s mission;
  • brief description of the program, including services provided;
  • number of unduplicated people the program served last year and percent at various poverty levels;
  • amount of funding requested; amount of the organization’s annual operating budget; amount of the budget for the program for which funding is sought;
  • data on changes in net family income 3 months and 6 months after completion of the program; and
  • name, phone number and email of the person to contact for more information.

The 2012 letters of intent for this strategy are due by March 30, 2012, and must be mailed to the Pohlad Family Foundation, 60 South Sixth Street, Suite 3900, Minneapolis, MN 55402.

A letter of intent will not be considered if it is longer than two pages, does not include all requested information above, or is sent electronically.  Full applications for this strategy will be invited in mid-April 2012, and funding decisions will be made in the summer of 2012.

2.)  The second strategy will attempt to assure that the safety net of basic human needs is maintained for those at or below 100% of the federal poverty level.  A small number of larger, established nonprofit organizations that serve primarily this population will be invited to apply for general operating support. The missions of these organizations will be to provide the poor with basic services (food, clothing, shelter, or primary health care).

Two-page letters of intent for organizations located in and serving the very poor with basic services in the nine-county Twin Cities area are due July 16, 2012.

The letters must include the strategy for which funding is sought and the following:

  • organization’s mission;
  • brief description of the organization, including services provided;
  • the number of unduplicated people the organization served last year and percent at various poverty levels;
  • amount of funding requested;
  • amount of the organization’s annual operating budget; and
  • name, phone number and email of the person to contact for more information.

The 2012 letters of intent for this strategy are due by July 15, 2012, and must be mailed to the Pohlad Family Foundation, 60 South Sixth Street, Suite 3900, Minneapolis, MN 55402.

A letter of intent will not be considered if it is longer than two pages, does not include all requested information above, or is sent electronically.  Full applications for this strategy will be invited in early August 2012 and funding decisions will be made late in the 2012 calendar year.
