Frequently Asked Questions |
- How does our organization apply for a grant?
- Please view our current opportunities page to see what programs/projects are open for application at this time.
- Can our organization apply for more than one grant per calendar year?
- Applications for more than one program can be submitted. However, it is rare that more than one grant is awarded per calendar year.
- How long does it take between submitting a grant application and receiving a decision?
- Time between application and grant decision varies between 2-6 months. Most programs require at least two months for application receipt, request evaluation and board decision.
- How do I learn about grant decisions?
- We inform all applicants of our grant decisions in writing.
- What programs are available for funding?
- Why doesn’t the Foundation accept unsolicited requests?
- The Foundation’s annual grantmaking budget is fully allocated amongst current programs/projects. Additionally, a small program staff provides sufficient capacity only for board approved activities.
- How does an organization apply for a family directed grant?
- Applications are not accepted for family directed grants. Instead, Foundation staff considers opportunities directly forwarded to them by a family member. Typically, these requests are of personal interest to family members and do not qualify for other foundation grant programs/projects.
- Are Foundation staff available to meet with representatives from organizations considering applying for a grant?
- Due to our small staff size, Foundation staff prefer brief phone conversations to answer questions not addressed on this website.
- Does the Foundation support fundraising events such as benefits, galas etc?
- No. As a practical matter, marketing benefits afforded by event sponsorships are not needed by private foundations. More importantly, IRS regulations related to benefits (e.g., tickets) that are part of event support sales, cannot be used by disqualified persons (which include all board, staff and employees of businesses owned by the Pohlad Family Foundation.)
- Does the Foundation fund organizations outside the Twin Cities Metro Area?
- Yes, but this is limited to a small number of programs (e.g., summer camp scholarships.) Most Foundation giving is focused on the nine county Twin Cities metro area, including Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott and western Washington.
- Does the Foundation support individuals or families?
- No, IRS guidelines prohibit support to individuals, families or groups that are not incorporated as 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
- Does the Foundation provide college scholarships?
- Is start up support for new organizations available from the foundation?
- Generally no. We believe greater impact can be had by supporting well established organizations with records of proven success.
- Where can I get information about foundation grants and its finances?
